Gate & boarding

Not a full flight. Yet another security check here including swab test and going through each hand carry on by hand. Two jetways one first/biz, second economy.

Dubai to Heathrow - London on 19 Nov 2012

Check-in

Checkin opens 3 hours before flight. All items xrayed before going to gate area. Ended up having to wait for them to open due to early arrival, you don't want to take a chance with the traffic coming from Abu Dhabi.

Private lounge

Part of the airport hotel and before gate C8, close enough to departure gate. Beef bacon is terrible and not worth the trouble.

Food & shops

Terminal 1: Loads of shopping with both local products and international quality goods. A shopping paradise. Most of the food is on the upper levels and towards the gates.

Dubai to Doha on 13 Nov 2012

Check-in

Terminal 1: area D send bag through X-ray machine and go through metal detector first before checkin desks. United desk manned by DNATA personnel more than 3 hours before the flight. Note that this is the dead end leg of the flight originating from IAD Dulles to Dubai and then to Doha, so the flight should be mostly empty.

Dubai to Amman on 25 Jan 2014

Gate & boarding

The flight was delayed but no-one seemed to want to say that it was. As a result there was some uncertainty and a degree of chaos at the gate.

Private lounge

Enormous spacious lounge taking up virtually an entire floor at the terminal. Was nearly empty when I was there, but had plenty of showers and options for food and drink. The vastness is such that you should head for the area nearest your gate. The only thing that spoils it is the number of luxury duty free shops you must walk through IN THE LOUNGE, which is rather tacky. If I want to go shopping, the terminal is excellent for that, the lounge should be a quiet place for relaxing, not to be expected to shop.

Note the spa is BEFORE the entrance, not in the spa ( you can mistakenly wander a long way trying to find it otherwise).

Also there is a good sit down restaurant in the lounge, which is a good idea if you are hungry and want to maximise sleep time on the relatively short sector from Dubai to London.
