Food & shops

Shake Shack is great — worth getting to T4 a bit early and walking out of your way to gate B34. The egg and cheese sandwich and coffee were both excellent, as I think anything on the menu would be from the look of the place.

Private lounge

Perhaps I'm spoilt by traveling internationally, but this Sky Club was unimpressive. Even the view wasn't great. I can't wait for the new Terminal 4 to open! Dried out carrot sticks and incompetent bar staff (diet coke and lime started out as just a diet coke, then with a lemon wedge, then with a slice of lime added) weren't the best face of the airline.

Wi-Fi

Like almost all terminals at JFK, aside from JetBlue T5, WiFi is not free in American's T8.

Security

The process was inefficient and archaic. Since when do you need to show your boarding pass at the body scanner?

Gate & boarding

We were told Brussels Airlines boards early and they did - our flight was at 515 and they had boarding scheduled at 415 - we got to the gate at 420 and it was empty - again, not sure if it was because the flight was empty but it was a breeze.

Food & shops

The Turkish kiosk near gate 5 Is a beacon of culinary light in a soulless tunnel of a terminal. The gozleme is very yummy (and of course greasy)

Check-in

The line for security at 6 am was insane, and it felt super inefficient. Waiting for 45 minutes.

New York to Istanbul on 20 Jan 2014

Check-in

For a Boeing 777, 3 counters open for Business Class, only 2 counters for Economy and Premium Economy. I'd say that's a tad bit insufficient number of check-in counters for a plane of that size. It was ridiculous. Staff had no idea and was constantly confused. They also reassigned my dad's seat (that was chosen 90 days prior to flight and was reconfirmed during online check-in) and seated him 8 rows behind me and my mom.

Check-in

I do not know if it was because it was Thanksgiving and there is not a lot of traffic to EU but the entire section was empty around 2:00 hours before the flight.

Security

It took about 15 mintues because of our Elite / Business Class status but otherwise the regular line would be around 30-40 minutes.
